What is In Vitro Fertilization?
In vitro fertilization (IVF treatment) is a type of assisted reproductive technology (ART) that involves fertilizing an egg with sperm outside of the body in an IVF treatment center performed by an IVF Specialist.
The process typically involves the following steps:
- Ovarian stimulation: The woman is given hormonal medications to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple mature eggs.
- Egg retrieval: The eggs are removed from the woman's ovaries using a needle guided by ultrasound.
- Fertilization: The eggs are combined with sperm in a laboratory dish or test tube, and left to fertilize for several hours
- Embryo culture: The resulting embryos are cultured in a laboratory for a few days until they are ready to be transferred.
- Embryo transfer: One or more embryos are transferred into the woman's uterus using a thin tube or catheter, with the hope that they will implant in the lining of the uterus and result in a successful pregnancy.
An IVF treatment center helps couples who are experiencing infertility due to various factors, such as blocked fallopian tubes, low sperm count or poor sperm motility, or endometriosis. It can also be used in cases where there is a genetic disorder that could be passed on to the child, or for same-sex couples or single individuals who wish to have a child.
Who is the right candidate for IVF?
- Women with blocked or damaged fallopian tubes: If the fallopian tubes are blocked or damaged, it can be difficult for the egg and sperm to meet, making natural conception difficult or impossible.
- Women with ovulation disorders: Women who have irregular ovulation or who do not ovulate at all may benefit from IVF treatment.
- Couples with unexplained infertility: Sometimes, despite a thorough infertility treatment evaluation, the cause of infertility cannot be identified. In these cases, IVF can be an effective treatment option.
- Men with low sperm count or poor sperm motility: When a man's sperm count is low or the sperm are not able to swim effectively, IVF with intracytoplasmic sperm injection can be used to fertilize the eggs.
- Individuals or couples with genetic conditions: IVF with preimplantation genetic testing can be used to test the embryos for specific genetic conditions before transfer.
- Same-sex couples or single individuals: IVF can be used by same-sex couples or single individuals who want to have a biological child.
